penius (A “genius” parody)
director
2019 - 2023
My comedy partners and I wanted to make fun of something we had seen on social media: artists talking about their nonsensical lyrics as if “yah yah yah” meant something deeper. This led to us putting together an entire production, with artists and musicians to parody Genius, brand-for-brand.
There’s nothing like a ridiculous musical parody full of dumb songs to make people laugh. At least, hopefully they’re laughing with the joke, not at us.
MAKING FUN OF A MASSIVE BRAND LIKE “RAP GENIUS” THROUGH A DIRECT PARODY
My creative comedy partners and I have been working on a new project called "Penius," a direct comedic parody of musical lyric company "Genius." Genius has a series called "Verified," which features videos with popular artists and influences pop culture through their deciphering of lyrics.
OVERVIEW
We create parody videos, songs, images and other content poking fun at real artists (like the "Band Age" lyric video below). This particular video was parodying "Band Aid," and their virtue signaling, subtly racist Christmas hit "Do They Know It's Christmas?".
I direct, edit and post-produce the videos, while our team collaborates on writing the music and scripts. Check out more of our parodies on YouTube!
